What Gilmore Girls taught me.

I have one absolute favorite TV show that I’ve watched 8 or 9 times in my life, and it’s Gilmore Girls. I know it may be such a basic show, but it’s my favorite. It made me what I am right now in this present moment.

Gilmore Girls is a show that contains a variety of characters who all go through different situations in their lives. If I’m being honest, my favorite characters are Jess and Rory, sort of basic yet conversational. In this issue, I’m going to talk about some lessons Gilmore Girls taught me.

Being cultured is extremely important—I can not emphasize it more.

Whenever I watch Gilmore Girls, especially after I just finished watching a movie, show, or reading a book, I feel like I get so many references that before that just went over my head. This reminds me how important it is to be engaged in cultural activities like movies or reading, and this is also the main reason why I do a movie night by myself every Saturday. Gilmore Girls led me to explore media I never would’ve expected to engage in.

Hard work will pay off.

When Rory first transferred to Chilton, she was behind, but slowly after working hard, she caught up and at the end was the valedictorian. Rory, Paris, Jess, and Lorelai all worked hard, they worked for their dreams and accomplished them. All of their dreams and beginnings were all different, but they found success one way or the other. Jess, despite having a rough childhood, never having stability, wrote a book, finally getting the stability and success he needed. Even becoming more successful than Rory. Lorelai was a teen mom, who had nothing, showed up at Independence Inn with no experience and asked for a job (very confidently, according to Mia), she worked her way up—even though all the other maids hated her—then became executive manager, later on even owning her own inn. Paris worked extremely hard all the way from birth to university, even into her career, she was editor of the Chilton paper, and the Yale Daily News. She became an OBGYN for a top New York clinic, and even Lorelai and Luke considered her clinic for when they wanted a child.

Coffee, Coffee, Coffee.

I love coffee, and the Gilmores do too. Whenever I’m tired and need to work I just get some coffee, like a true Gilmore girl would. Lorelai and Rory are coffee addicts, and like them, I love having coffee. I try getting a different type of coffee every time I go to Tim Hortons, but currently my favorite is a vanilla latte.

Books should go everywhere with you.

In the prom episode where Dean and Rory are in Miss Patty’s dance studio, Rory takes a book out of her purse, and mentions how she takes a book with her everywhere. Because of that, I take my book everywhere—almost—I take my current read to school, or when I’m going out with friends. I read my books in the car, in class, etc.

That wraps up my issue 9 for Untitled Journals. Although people may hate Gilmore Girls, it’s become a vital part of my existence, it’s shaped me into who I am. I really don’t care for the hate, because I’ve watched it 10 times, I’m currently on my 10th rewatch.
